We get asked this question on the daily “What power companies support solar power?” and it is a fast-moving environment so please don’t hold us to this. You can be with any company you like when you go solar, however, you do not get paid back for your exported power by all power companies.
To our knowledge, Electric Kiwi and Energy Online do not purchase your power back that you send back to the grid.
We prefer to promote Meridian & Mercury as your power companies as they are the only renewable generators in NZ. Both of these companies provide an 8c kW buy back. Powershop is another good power company to look into (a subsidiary company of Meridian) and their buy back is 8.5c per kW.
Genesis offers a slightly higher pay back of 12c per kW but they are not 100% renewable so are not a company we fully support. Trustpower offers 7c, Contact offers 8c and Pulse Energy & Grey Power offers 7c per kW.
Flick is a company that was offering spot pricing for exported power (a huge win for NZ) but unfortunately are not in the position to take on new customers at the moment. As soon as they are back on the market we will be letting all of our clients know. We are hoping that their spot-pricing for exported power will be available to New Zealanders someday soon.
As you can see, you do not get paid very much per kW exported to the grid (compared to what you pay to buy it back off them). We do not design your systems to be exporting to the grid all year round. Naturally, you will send power back to the grid intermittently, but we focus on designing the system for your usage and ensuring that you are consuming the majority of what you produce. This will give you the best return on investment.
