How Do Solar Panels Work?

Illustration showing how solar energy works, from panel to power output, by Ecoefficient

Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity through their solar cells. This energy then passes through an inverter, turning it into usable power for your home or business. Any excess can be stored in a battery or exported back to the grid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started With Solar

The main reasons are to reduce your power-bill, have power in an outage, add value to your home all whilst reducing your carbon footprint.

This varies significantly, anywhere from $10,000-$35,000 for an average home

This varies for each property, but an average residential home needs around 12x panels without a battery and 18x panels with a battery.

You don’t need a battery in order for your solar system to function and to save you money. However, a battery does save you more money on your power-bill and it gives your home power in an outage. Most homes will benefit from an 8-16kWh battery system – it all depends on the budget available for you to invest.

Definitely, we can design the system so that you can easily extend down the track.

Yes, we aim to reduce your power bill by around 40-50% with solar alone, or up to 90% with solar and a battery. We cannot guarantee this saving, as it all depends on your power usage and habits.

Installation Process

Around 1-3 days on average.

You require an import/export meter which your power company will provide for you. This counts the amount of power that you will import/export. The exported power is credited to you on your power bill. In New Zealand, this is the ‘on-grid’ compliance requirement.

This varies for each person, but the average is 12-15c per kWh currently, however new legislation mid-2026 will require power companies to pay much more back to their customers during peak export times.

Product Lifespan & Quality

Our panels come with a 30-year performance warranty. At 30 years they are still producing at over 80% of their original efficiency, so their life expectancy could be 40 years or more. Most of our inverters and batteries come with a 10-year warranty and their life expectancy is around 15 years.

We only install premium lithium-ion batteries, each backed by a 10-year warranty. Our most popular choice among customers is the SigEnergy modular battery, which comes in a variety of sizes to suit different households and energy requirements. We also offer the Tesla Powerwall 3, providing 13.5kWh of storage and a strong option for many homes.

Performance & Monitoring

We ensure that every system comes with some form of app based monitoring, so we will talk to you about which option is best for your system.

Short answer, yes. However, we do not provide or recommend solar hot water tubes/panels. Heating water directly on your roof is now considered old technology. There is a large amount of maintenance required for solar hot water and in winter it sometimes leaves you with cold water. We provide solar panels that produce electricity, and we divert that electricity to your hot water cylinder. This then powers the element within your cylinder, meaning that your hot water is now powered by solar power.

If you have a solar battery through us, then your essential appliances in your home will work in a power outage if that is what we have designed. If you don’t have a solar battery, then your solar system will turn off and you will be in an outage like everyone else.

Future Expansion

Of course, if you’d like to add a battery in the future, we can discuss your options and ensure your system is set up correctly for the option in the future.

Yes. You can easily add more solar panels and batteries in the future as your energy needs change.
